You do not want to spend too much money on start up costs. It is a good idea to buy used equipment to start off with. To find used items look in the news paper, at yard sales, used stores, message boards, and even eBay. Buy a few supplies then as you start making money you can replace them and buy more.
You want to be sure that you have a plan, this will not be set in stone but you should use it as your guide to keep you on the right track.

You need to think of a business name, you want it to be catchy so your customers will remember the name. An idea that you should consider is making a list of words that describe your services and some catchy phrases, these way you can have several name ideas so if one is already in use you have other ideas. Once you have a name check and be sure that it is not already in use. You will need to get a business license and make business cards to hand out. Another idea you may chose to use is to create some flyers to give out announcing your new business.

You will want to specialize in an area so you can reach your market better; this does not mean you cannot accept business from other fields you are just marketing to a specific field like medical, legal, academics and etc. When you are advertising your services keep in mind that you can talk about what services you offer all day but customers want to hear is how you can solve their problems. Do not make the common mistake of not marketing enough. Some new business will send out flyers and postcards and maybe one follow up call and then expect to have their phone ring off the hook. Well you need to have your business in front of them on a continual basis, so when they do have a problem that you can help them with they will think of your name. One contact will not keep them reminded of your services.

When you are out marketing you should always ask for the sale, if you are not then you are missing potential income. You also want to make up your fees; you need to stick to your prices. Try to avoid taking lower offers because you will feel over worked and regret in the end.
